The Aquatic Weed Cycle
When algae and aquatic weeds become a nuisance in a pond, algaecides and aquatic herbicides are often used to control them. When algae and aquatic weeds die, they sink to the bottom of the pond and add to a muck layer. This muck layer also consists of fallen leaves, dead fish, grass clippings and other types of debris. As the muck decomposes it produces nitrates and phosphates which are the nutrients that are used in conjunction with sunlight allowing algae and aquatic weeds to grow. The cycle starts all over again.
